Getting other sites to link to your website has been at the core of website search engine optimisation since shortly after Google launched, more than ten years ago. However, in an age when everything happens so quickly it seems an oxymoron that a core web activity seems to take so long to achieve results.

When building a fully functional online store selling hundreds of thousands of products takes just a few days work, why should it take months of continued effort to rise to the top of the search results?

The answer is that Google are trying to make the rankings a true reflection of relative importance. If this were not so, then we would have a system whereby any major multinational could throw millions into an SEO budget and guarantee top placement. We should be thankful that the search engine providers are helping to keep the web a more-or-less level playing field for businesses.

The temptation we all have as web marketing professionals is to look for automation and short cuts at every opportunity. If someone promises to sell us the software that automatically generates a million free backlinks we instinctively grasp for this, knowing that manually getting hold of a million backlinks would be a lifetime’s work.

Of course, the reality of such software opportunities is never realised. In fact my first piece of advice is to ditch automated link building tools altogether. They are too easily replicable by your competitors to be of real value. In addition in most cases they fail to generate ‘good’ links.

They also manage to annoy webmasters with their poorly written automated emails. This is important because a good backlink is only likely to be given if the person at the other end likes you. They are unlikely to like you if you send them emails that they perceive as spam.

So, how do you get a link?

Find a site that you want to link to you. Now think seriously about why the human being who receives your request for a link should comply.

Think about the benefits to his or her visitors, the close fit between your two sites. The fact that you are not in direct competition and the free link that you are going to give in return. In your email mention all these things in detail. Be honest about exactly which page you want the link on and the page where your reciprocal link will appear. You might also tell the prospective partner about traffic levels, Page Rank and future plans for your site.

If you don’t think this is enough of an inducement for them then don’t send the email yet. Before you do send it why not up your offer? You could offer to write a brand new article for their site. Most web owners love unique new content so this has real value for them. If you own more than one site, offer 2 links in return for one. In short, put yourself in their position and answer all the questions they might have regarding whether to coply with your link request.

Once you have got the offer right, look carefully at the copy. Proof read it again and again. Spelling mistakes and grammatical howlers speak of unprofessional, uncaring attitudes. In addition, remove cultural references that may not be appropriate. For example, most British webmasters will junk any link request emails they receive that mention God, Jesus or any other deity. The British simply do not include messages of devotion in business emails and will react badly to emails that do include them.

Trawl your own inbox and look at emails that you responded to. Think about the words they used and the ideas that these formed in your mind. By really thinking hard about the emails we send out we can achieve great results and get lots of good quality links.

1. Research the keywords you want to rank for.

Before you can optimize a site for the keywords you want to rank for, you need to know if those keywords are worth ranking for. 2. Assess the competition for your chosen keywords.

To rank well in Google, the primary thing you need to do is build links into your web site that use the keywords you want to rank for as the link text. For instance, if you want to rank in Google for “small blue widgets”, then you need links aimed at your site with the phrase “small blue widgets” as the link text.

However, you need to have a variety of link texts to prevent Google from thinking you are spamming their search engine. A good rule of thumb is the 60/30/10 rule: 60% of your links should have your primary keywords as the link text, 30% should have your secondary keywords, and 10% should have a third set of keywords.

Make sure you build your links slowly over time, at the rate of 3-5 links per day at most. If you build your links too fast, Google will think you’re out to game their search engine and will not rank your site well. This is especially true if your site is brand new. For some time now search engines like Google and Yahoo have been employing Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) as part of their search results. Google started this back in 04.

While LSI is not a new search engine optimization topic, it is very important in developing relevancy for ranking, building out the long tail of search but now also for universal search.

What is LSI and how does it work?

Latent Semantic Indexing is a key component in how the search engines understand the “context” of website content. LSI is based on a concept called co-occurrence clustering of words and the association of documents based on the occurrence data.

In short, the search engines essentially learn what words mean based on the other words around them. This practice is particularly important in many languages as it is fairly common for words to have multiple meanings.

For example: let’s look at the word “shoes”.

At this point, you really don’t know what kind of shoes I am referring to.

If the surrounding text had content that described triathlons, marathons, jogging or features brands like Nike, Brooks and Saucony, now you know that shoes means running shoes.

However, if the surrounding text stated drums, pads, rotors, disc, and metallic or features brands like Raybestos and Bendix, now you know that shoes means brake shoes.

Of course, if the surrounding text stated hoofs, paddocks, stables, and horse stalls, now you know that shoes means horseshoes.

Having these other related words on a page helps the search engines understand the “context” of a given keyword and support the relevancy of the search result. Without these clarifying words, you do not know what kind of shoes will arrive in your search query. With these related words, now the search results are more relevant.

In addition, these related words helps build the long tail of search keywords. When keywords and content are developed appropriately, it is not uncommon to end up with several hundred to several thousand keywords. In fact, many of our clients often have but 25 keywords as part of their SEO campaign but 12 months later have 500-2,500 keyword combinations and permutations gathered via Google Analytics.

Now with universal search, LSI is even more important. The purpose of universal search is to help identify and refine search intent. Universal search is now associating different media types as products of the search result.

If you search for Hawaii Vacations, people expect to pictures if not video of a beach on Maui. Not only do you want to read a review of a specific tour, but you want to hear a podcast of that tour.

If you sell Plus Size Prom Dresses, people not only expect to see last years styles but this years styles. If you are looking for a prom dress, chances are you also need matching shoes, handbag, hair accessories, etc.

In addition to pictures, search engines like Google and Yahoo know that people that are interested in prom dresses also frequent social media or networking sites like YouTube, MySpace, FaceBook, MyYearbook, Imeem, Bebo and Flickr. 5 Essential SEO Techniques
